We’ve all heard expressing “You’re What You Eat”. Although this may be an excuse our parents had because we would not eat candy for dinner, a new study shows that what we eat can have a major impact on our health, especially when we age.
A study in The Journals of Gerontology, conducted by researchers at the University of Southhampton, shows that people who eat a good and varied diet throughout their adult lives also increase the likelihood of having a better physical fitness and feeling better later in life.
Adults who ate more healthy during the study period gained better results in the three different final tests they did when they were between 60-64 years.
The study analyzed each individual’s diet 4 times between the ages of 36-64. It was then found that those who ate more fruit, vegetables and whole wheat bread, (and less refined carbohydrates and processed meat) managed better in tests like stagnation, standing balance exercises and a so-called “timed up-and-go test” (TUG) .
Adults who improved their diet during the study showed better results in the first 2 of these tests. It shows that even if you switch to a more healthy diet, even in late age, you notice a difference.
“Improving your diet can improve your health regardless of your age. But this study mainly shows that by having a good diet throughout their adult lives – mainly by cutting down processed food and eating more fruits, vegetables and whole grains – can give you more physical strength and stamina later in life “says headwriter Sian Robinson, professor of Nutritional Epidemiology at UoS.
